Sharing starts with understanding Ownership

imagesThis statement is so important.  One of the many things that RIE and Montessori have in common is the belief that children need to feel ownership: of their bodies, of their abilities, of their feelings, of their actions.  Then, they can take responsibility and pride, and build on those accomplishments.  This is why the american emphasis on sharing is so unhelpful.  Not that we do not want children to be generous and empathetic, but that this is so difficult, and yet so expected.  Young children do not begin to develop real empathy until age 4!

Below is a lovely post by a fellow RIEer 🙂

Sharing starts with understanding Ownership.
